Lisara's Experiment

Lisara has really enjoyed learning different scientific concepts and took it upon herself learn about chemical reactions.  She constructed a volcano setting and then mixed vinegar together with baking soda. When the vinegar mixed with the baking soda the soda and vinegar bubbled to the top of the volcano and flowed down the sides. It was great to witness the reaction and discuss the reason for it happening.

Soccer and Rugby with Hamish

We have been lucky enough to have Hamish from Kiwisports coming into work with us each week. He has been helping us to learn new soccer and rugby skills.  Our lessons start by learning a couple of new skills and then we play a game that uses the skills we have just learnt.  It is great fun and an awesome way to get everybody involved in learning new ball handling skills.

Science Roadshow

On Friday we had the Science Roadshow come to school and set up in the hall.  When we visited the roadshow we were amazed with all of the exhibitions that were available for us to try out.  Our session started with the scientists sharing some experiments with us and teaching us the science behind them.  We were then able to wonder around the different exhibitions and have a go at testing them out.  They really challenged our thinking and we all came away from the roadshow wanting to know more.

Homework

The Letter C

Choose a food that begins with the letter C.  What can you tell us about this food – Is it a fruit or vegetable?  What are some of the recipes can it be used in? How do you eat it (knife and fork, fingers, with another type of eating utensil), where did the food originate from?  What are some interesting facts about the food you have chosen?

You can choose how you present your homework.  It may be presented in your homework book, a poster, a pamphlet, google doc or slide – You choose.

We will aim to share this homework on Friday 10th August (Week 4).

Wheels

We had a great time using our wheels (and PE equipment) on Wednesday afternoon.  Our goal was to try and figure out how force from our legs is used to make our wheels move or how force from different parts of our body can be used to move sports equipment (objects) in different ways.  Many of the children chose to work collaboratively with their peers and many great discussions were had about how to get creative with the gear that was being used.

Gymnastics

Term 3 has seen us begin to focus on Gymnastics during P.E.  Gymnastics is a great way for us to experiment using different forces to move our body in different ways.  It was great to see all children having a go at all the activities.

Introduction to Forces

Last Monday we had a Topic assembly.  The aim of this was to introduce the scientific concept of force.  Each teacher displayed a different example of how force is used to move either our body or an object.  We also discussed the difference between an observation and an inference.  We will be talking more about observations and inferences as we have a go working through our own experiments.
